This weekend I opted for a relaxing Saturday night, celebrating my younger cousin's 13th birthday with our family. I was expecting a quarter-life crisis hanging out with a bunch of teenyboppers as the old working girl, but things turned out surprisingly well.
After a long dinner, wine and a huge slice of birthday cake (with ice cream of course), I was feeling great. Late night, I even got into some insightful and serious conversation with the birthday girl and her fellow 13 year old friends. I heard all about their weekend plans, complete with their love life synopsises and the juicy details from the prior evening's middle school dance.
When the family festivities died down and I was sipping solo with my Pinot Noir, I got to thinking...are we really that different now than when we were 13?
Birthday girl's beauty routine: Getting ready for Friday night dances is frustrating. "Yea Emily has straight hair so she can get ready so much faster than me because she doesn't have to straighten".
Blogette's beauty routine: Friday night is always spent straightening, curling, teasing, pinning and spraying and my hair always looks the same. How am I 22 and don't know how to do my hair cute yet!? Blogette's friend comes over with perfectly straight and bouncy I look like I just got a $60 blow-out hair. "Yea I haven't used a flat iron in years! I just blow dry!". Bitch.
Birthday girl's love life: Gushes about her new boyfriend Neil. Shows me pictures of them on her cell phone and says they are really serious and that she is totally over her ex.
Blogette's friend's love life: I bump into a friend from college at the bar. Gushes about her new boyfriend. Shows me pictures of them on her cell phone and says that she is totally over her ex.
Birthday girl's PDA: She spends the night texting on her purple "Gleam". Tells me that her phone is SO uncool and that she can't wait until she is eligible for an upgrade to get the Voyager like all of her friends have.
Blogette's PDA: Even though I like my Blackberry Curve, I'm pissed that I got it in July and they've since come out with a newer Blackberry. How much is it again to upgrade if you're not eligible?
Birthday girl's present (from family): Ugg boots. She explains to me that she is just too old for knock-off's and wouldn't be caught dead in her "Emu's" now that she is 13.
Blogette's friend's present (to herself): Burberry rainboots. She explains to me that she is just too old for knock-off's and wouldn't be caught in her old Wellies now that she is working in Boston.
Birthday girl's weekend: Highlight of her weekend is the middle school dance on Friday night. She gets ready with her girlfriends before the dance and trades clothes from Hollister and Abercrombie. The dance is sort of lame though because none of the boys talk to the girls, but she has fun dancing with her girlfriends anyways. She passes out on her friend's couch from late night sugar crash from Halloween candy, sleepover!
Blogette's weekend: Highlight of my weekend is bar hopping in Boston on Friday night. I get ready with my girlfriends before the bars and trade clothes from Forever21 and H&M. The bars are sort of lame though because none of the guys talk to the girls, but I have fun dancing with my girlfriends anyways. Pass out on friend's couch from too many Tequila shots, sleepover!
End of story I learned I'm not too old or lame to hang out with 13 year olds; they can relate. But I did notice that Birthday Girl had three slices of cake (with ice cream of course) and proceeded to tell me that my hand me downs I brought over are still too big on her. Maybe I do wish I was 13 again after all.
