I’m all for chic lit., but I try and find a balance between reading trashy romance novels and non-fiction for when I commute to work each day. I’m currently reading Veil of Roses by Laura Fitzgerald and it’s the perfect happy medium. It’s a light, girly read that I’ve been able to fly through, while still educating myself on women’s lifestyles in Iran.

The story is told by Tamila Soroush, a 27-year-old Iranian woman who moves to Tucson, Ariz. to stay with her older sister, Maryam. Tami is only visiting for 3 months care of her temporary visa, and must find a Persian husband in that time so she can stay in the States. There’s a chic lit. style love story too, think Bend It Like Beckham with a much older, mature couple and no crazy soccer antics.

Through reading about Tami, I’ve learned how courtship and marriage evolve in the Iranian culture, from flirting in internet cafes to terrifying arranged marriages. I’ve also began to appreciate the small comforts that are not afforded to young woman in Iran. It has been eye opening to learn how an Iranian woman experiences our everyday habits, such as going to Starbucks or Victoria’s Secret or going out dancing with friends.

The timing for recognizing small pleasures that are too often forgotten by woman in the U.S. couldn’t be more precise with Thanksgiving right around the corner! Curl up with Veil of Roses in your post turkey coma and you won’t be disappointed.

I've been a fan of the Olsen twins since back in the Michelle days, even though my obsession has dwindled to more of a weird observation over the years. These days, I'd be more likely to scan through some bizarre fashion choices the two made instead of tune in to the Tanner family. Of course the twins have recognized this financial goldmine by launching a bio of sorts with Penguin books, Influence.

According to MK and Ashley's official blog:

"Influence introduces readers to respected artists, seasoned designers and others who have influenced Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen over the past decade. The book will feature influential figures including; Christian Louboutin, Lauren Hutton, Bob Colacello, Terry Richardson, Jack Pierson and Robert Lee Morris. A coffee table book, Influence includes exclusive photographs of Ashley and Mary-Kate from world renowned photographer Rankin, and a wide variety of other never-before-seen materials and interviews from Mary-Kate and Ashley’s personal collections".

Ashley Olsen said of the project, “Mary-Kate and I have filled Influence with the most interesting, challenging, creative people we know—the ones who helped pave the way for us and our generation.” Hm. Do you think they included the influences that led MK to rehab?

The 272-page may also entice fans with a "private collection" of photos of the girls and their own drawings.

I'm not one to vouch for the Olsen's "hard-earned" success, but the NY Times did a really interesting profile of the twins last week that ponders their status as fashion icons (or fashion flops?) and their growing up in America's spotlight. Definitely worth a read even if the two aren't coffee table status in your mind.
